Heat Therapy Is the Next Best Thing to Exercise

Oct 1, 2026

A lot of people want the health benefits of exercise, but their body, schedule, or doctor says not right now. Christian Staples walks through new University of Oregon research from the Bowerman Sports Science Center. Scientists compared a dry sauna, a far-infrared sauna, and soaking in a hot tub. The hot tub raised core temperature more, and that heat lined up with better blood flow, lower blood pressure, and an immune response they measured after the soak, not after the saunas.

Exercise is still the gold standard when you can do it. If you can’t or won’t, heat therapy is a solid backup. Talk to your doctor first, then use the heat smart, and don’t overdo it.
